Frequently Asked Questions
"Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor. Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there's more growing to be done.”
— Michelle Obama
Is COUNSELLING or COACHING right for me?
That’s a great question!
First, they have many features in COMMON:
- Partnering with me in confidential conversations to create new understandings, mindsets, habits and skills
- Helping you make progress with concerns including: work-life integration; time and stress management; clarity in transitions; purpose and meaning; energy and health; connection and belonging; communication and boundaries; coping with difficult relationships
- Getting a receipt for submission to benefits for Registered Psychologist
Second, please consider these DIFFERENCES as they apply to your needs:
COUNSELLING can include understanding the past roots of current challenges; proceeds at a flexible pace; allows for different topics in sessions; and can address psychological challenges including mood, anxiety, and grief.
COACHING focuses on a specific topic or goal that guides the development of your program and practices, and is central in each session; the focus is on the present and future; there is a commitment to meeting biweekly for a minimum of three months; and there is assigned homework and reflection questions.
Let’s talk about which approach will serve you best!
How will we meet?
Our conversations will be over video on a secure application called Doxy.me, which is similar to Zoom or FaceTime. It's free and easy to use on phones, tablets and computers. Alternatively, if you prefer to just talk on the phone, I am open to that too, as well as Teams or other video-conferencing platforms.
What are your hours?
I am available several weekday mornings 8-10 am, and select afternoon/evenings 3-7 pm. I may be able to accommodate lunch time meetings upon request. I am in the Eastern Standard Time zone.
What are your fees? How do I pay?
Payments are made via a credit card or Paypal at the time of booking an appointment, or by e-transfer the morning of the appointment day.
For COUNSELLING, my fee is $250/session (50 minutes conversation, 10 minutes file review/updating), with no added tax. If you request a letter, I will charge according to this hourly rate. Counselling sessions are booked at a frequency and amount that suits your needs.
My COACHING fee is also $250/hour, no added tax, with the first session being 60 minutes, and subsequent sessions being 45 minutes conversation and 15 minutes for program document updating. I work with coaching clients for a minimum of three months to allow for development and consolidation of new mindsets, skills and habits. For example, a three month program will cost $1500, in 6 increments of $250. Extensions for a longer program are available, as are booster sessions. Corporate rates are commensurate with market rates for professional coaching.
Receipts under my license as a Registered Psychologist for individual treatment are provided for both counselling and coaching. This is legitimate as my college considers coaching a treatment modality. I am licensed to provide services in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
I can also tailor COACHING receipts to suit:
-
Business owners
-
Professionals in development
- Government and private sector sponsorship (inquire about corporate rates)
What if I miss or cancel an appointment?
Barring exceptional circumstances, I ask for 48 hours notice to reschedule an appointment. Otherwise, the session will be billed as normal.
Are our conversations confidential?
As a Registered Psychologist, my involvement with you as a counsellor or coach is a completely confidential matter and will not be revealed to anyone without your permission, unless there is risk of harm to yourself or another person, a health professional has committed misconduct, or I am subpoenaed.
Additionally, if your employer or organization has contracted with me to coach you, you can choose to agree to some communication between me and them, but the limits will be transparent from the beginning. My strong preference is three-way meetings.
Are there types of challenges you do NOT see as a counsellor?
I work with individuals aged 25 and up. Certain challenges are best addressed by clinicians working in a multi-disciplinary team, and/or with specialized training with specific populations. As such, I do NOT work with: couples; children, teens, and young adults (aged 24 and younger); WSIB or MVA clients; people diagnosed with personality disorders; people struggling with drug and/or alcohol overuse, abuse, addiction, anorexia, bulimia, active cutting/self-harm or active suicidality.
